Welcome to Canaan Farm

This is a diary of our Garden ,we are a family of 8, Mumma ,Papa and our 6 children.We all like to garden. Some water,some plant, some harvest,but we all enjoy our jobs,Our Farm is 3.9 acres,we came here in sept 2008 to grow food ,have animals and enjoy the country life .There wasn't much here when we arrived just waist high weeds and the end of a 13 year drought.There is much to learn here ,our climate is mediterranean we have cool winters & hot dry summers (last year it got to 47.1c in the shade),we live in the Wimmera region,Western Victoria,Australia right in the middle of a farming community that grow mass amounts of wheat,lentils,canola,&chickpeas. We are turning our small farm into our own little garden of Eden

Ezekiel 36:35 They will say, "This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden;

My Gardening Mojo

I have not had any desire whatso ever to be out in our gardens for the last few months ,I know this will pass as the hot weather leaves..this morning it was a little cooler 20c so we all got out and done a little harvesting and weeding
The girls harvesting tomatos
Deon pulling out the withered zucchinis

I have learnt  alot about our climate this season..we have had nothing but continuous high 30's for almost 2 months now with I think 2 days of rain .. Hot searing sun on a girls veggie plot is not good..when the books say 6 to 8 hours of sunshine ,they mean for everywhere else other than here, the truth is we have an arid summer and a temperate winter, but it has only taken me this summer to fully get that fact

This is year is the poorest pumpkin season we have ever had in the history of us gardening anywhere out of 20 plants we have gotten 12 pumpkins

 I got one watermelon to ripen but it was not sweet it was lovely and juicy but little flavour,another one for the cow
this pumpkin got caught between a post and a tyre LOL

We are however have a excellent beans season here is another lot of beans blanched and into the freezer for the winter

and to leave on a happy note we have gotten a wonderful little corn harvest this year

  1. Still looking good despite the sometimes annoying Aussie heat disrupting our garden plans! Maybe you could get some shade cloths for your lovely raised beds for next summer, I know I need them here in hot Adelaide but I still haven't 'gotten around to it' lol. I have been the same this summer with little inclination to garden, roll on Autumn!! :)

  2. I really think my success this year was the mild Summer here in Adelaide...it may get hotter through March in a final burst, maybe I have just ignored it this year, I dont know....but then I have a certain amount of shade in my garden too...so not the full sun on the veg all day...they get a break at some point. Its all an adventure, each season is different and a new challenge..thats why I love veg gardening so much....you never know what the new season will bring...

  3. My snake beans have suffered the heat.

    It's been hot here with no rain. A very strange tropical monsoonal season. I will try and get more peanuts into the ground and also try my hand at growing chokos this week.

  5. i am hoping to convince hubby to build a pergola to plant some grapevines to shade the north side of the house in summer then it will all drop off thru the winter and let in the light
